AHL Preseason 2022: W-B/Scranton - 3 at Hershey - 2 (SO) 10/9/22

HERSHEY, Pa. - The Hershey Bears fired 40 shots toward Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender Filip Lindberg Sunday afternoon, but the Pens goalie stood tall in a dominant 38-save performance before upping the ante in the shootout - turning away five of the Bears' six shooters - to allow the Penguins to snag a "gutsy" 3-2 win.

"I mean, Lindberg was phenomenal for us in those first two periods, and then in overtime - just some sensational saves. I can't say enough about what he did," head coach JD Forrest told InsideAHLHockey.com after the game.

Chris Ortiz joined an odd man rush and finished off a nice play from Ty Glover to give the Penguins an early 1-0 lead 1:20 into the contest, and from there Lindberg really stole the show - stopping 15 shots in the opening period and keeping his team ahead despite being largely out-shot and out-chanced by a much more experienced lineup from Hershey in what was their final preseason game.

Lindberg faced another 15 shots in the middle frame, stopping all but a Shane Gersich one-timer from the bottom of the right-wing circle off a smart pass from the high slot by Sam Anas, keeping the Pens in a 1-1 game late into the frame before Brooklyn Kalmikov scored in his Penguins' preseason debut to give WBS a 2-1 lead heading to the third period.

Hershey's Henrik Rybinski made a nice move 1-on-1 entering the offensive zone and took it to the net before getting rewarded to tie the game at 2-2 on a really nice shorthanded tally by the incoming rookie forward.

The Bears dominated the 3-on-3 OT much like they controlled large portions of regulation. They out-shot the Penguins 6-0 in the extra session, but Lindberg stood on his head to get the game to the shootout.

It took six rounds, but a far-post and in shot from Sam Houde in the sixth round ended up being the deciding shootout winner after Lindberg came up with one more stop on Mike Vecchione to close out the Penguins' win.

The Bears finish the preseason 0-3, while the Penguins (3-0) have one final preseason contest Wednesday night on the road in Lehigh Valley.
