GAME STORY

1st Period

After some back-and-forth play in the opening minutes, Binghamton got the game's first extended pressure and it resulted in the game's first penalty as Gerry Fitzgerald sat for a slashing minor 3:09 into the contest.

The Devils didn't score on the ensuing power play, but it appeared to set the tone for the period as Binghamton dominated play for a majority of the period.

Lehigh Valley looked to be getting their first power play chance at the 7:57 mark when Josh Jacobs was whistled for hooking, but a Cal O'Reilly hooking minor five seconds later and a German Rubtsov high-sticking penalty 40 seconds saw the Phantoms head back to the penalty kill.

J-F Berube was pressed into action early, and was fantastic in a first frame that saw Binghamton out shoot Lehigh Valley by a 16-5 margin. Some untimely turnovers forced Berube to come up with some tough saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the middle frame.

2nd Period

After a scoreless first period allowed Lehigh Valley to escape unscathed, the pucks that Binghamton weren't putting in in the first frame started to go in during the middle frame.

Shortly after a failed Phantoms' power play, Egor Sharangovich sent a pass up to Josh Jacobs for a 2-on-1 chance and Jacobs elected to shoot from atop the right-wing circle - having his shot partially blocked down by a Phantoms defender in front before it scooted under Berube and into the back of the net to put Binghamton ahead 1-0 with 12:51 remaining in the period.

Just over a minute later, David Kase was whistled for hooking and Binghamton captialized on the ensuing power play to extend the Devils' lead to 2-0 with 11:11 left in the middle frame. Kyle Cumiskey got a puck to Ben Street in the slot, and the veteran forward looked pass as he fired a quick shot through the five-hole on Berube for his seventh of the season. Brett Seney added a second assist on the play.

Lehigh Valley was playing better in the second period than they had in the 1st, but the two quick goals against just 100 seconds apart had them searching for anything to try to shift momentum back into their favor.

Matthew Strome was in a physical battle along the boards with Michael Paliotta and after the two exchanged some shoves behind the net, Paliotta drilled Strome at the net front with a cross-check and the Phantoms got a power play with a chance to turn the tides.

On the ensuing power play, Devils goalie Louis Domingue came up with not one but two stops seconds apart on hard shots from the high-slot from Greg Carey - the second of which came with the Devils' goalie missing his stick.

Later on the sequence, Carey got a puck to O'Reilly, who fed Andy Welinski at the center point for a blast that went past everyone on its way into the net to cut the Devils' lead in half. It marked Welinski's third goal on the season and eighth point on the season in his eighth game with the Phantoms this year.

With just over three minutes left, Morgan Frost attempted a lacrosse-style shot from behind the net. Unfortunately for Frost, Domingue came up with the stop to keep Binghamton ahead 2-1 heading to the third.

3rd Period

Heading to the third, the Phantoms had the better of things in the middle frame despite allowing the two goals in short order. They out shot the Devils by a nearly 2-to-1 margin (13-7) and had several extended shifts in the offensive zone, but credit to Domingue for making some timely saves to preserve the Devils' lead.

Early in the third, Berube made a stop on Fabian Zetterlund and kicked what looked to be a harmless rebound into the left-wing corner. Unfortunately for Lehigh Valley, Devils forward Mikhail Maltsev was first to the loose puck and fired a bad angle shot that went top shelf on Berube - extending the Devils' lead to 3-1 and providing Maltsev with his first career pro goal in North America.

The Phantoms continued to pressure, but to no avail as they dropped their second straight game in regulation and fell to 6-4-5 on the season.
