BINGHAMTON, NY - The Lehigh Valley Phantoms look to finish strong on their six-game road trip Friday night in Binghamton against the Devils before hosting the Devils Saturday to complete a home-and-home series with an old rival dating back to the Adirondack Phantoms days when the Phantoms would play the then-Albany Devils.

Lehigh Valley Phantoms Roster Notes

Alex Lyon got the start in the team's most recent game last Sunday, but Carter Hart is expected to get the start in net Friday in Binghamton.

GAME STORY

FIRST PERIOD

After a back-and-forth first five minutes, an errant stretch pass intended for Mike Vecchione went for icing. A seemingly harmless play.

Binghamton won the ensuing offensive zone face-off and got the puck back to the right point for Colby Sissons, whose shot bounced off of forward Ryan Schmelzer and changed direction on its way past Carter Hart to give the Devils a 1-0 lead 6:34 into the 1st period.

Just about 90 seconds later, after a Phantoms' turnover in the neutral zone on a breakout, the Devils pounced on the puck and scored on the ensuing odd-man chance.

John Quenneville got a puck ahead for Brandon Baddock on the left wing, and he spotted Brandon Gignac all alone in the middle. Baddock connected with Gignac, with the latter beating Hart with a quick shot to extend the Devils' lead over the Phantoms to 2-0.

It just seemed like the Phantoms couldn't string it all together in the first period.

They had glimpses of good offensive pressure, but no finish. Speed coming out of the zone on the breakout, but a untimely turnover.

SECOND PERIOD

The Phantoms turned things around in the middle frame, starting with a strong effort on the PK to begin the period - killing off 1:24 of carryover time from the first period.

From there, the Phantoms were able to solve Eddie Lack and make it a one goal game just 5:04 into the period.

Zach Palmquist fed a cross-ice pass to Greg Carey, who fired a hard pass across for David Kase to re-direct in past Lack to draw the Phantoms within a goal in a 2-1 game.

Lost on the play was the hustle from Phil Varone, who turned the puck over in the offensive zone and got all the way back into the Phantoms' defensive zone to break up a play and start the rush back up ice that led to Kase's goal.

With the Phantoms shorthanded 7:48 into the period, Mikhail Vorobyev and German Rubtsov put on a penalty killing clinic.

The two forwards cycled in the offensive zone for quite some time before Rubtsov later tallied a highlight reel goal to tie the game at 2-2.

Rubtsov took a pass from Vorobyev and entered the offensive zone with speed, shifting to his backhand to get around a defender in the right-wing circle before getting it back to his forehand atop the crease for a tap in past Lack for his 5th of the season.

Carter Hart made a crucial stop late in the 2nd period with his team shorthanded to keep the game tied at 2-2, going post to post to stop Nathan Bastian with his left skate on a backdoor play.

THIRD PERIOD

The Phantoms made it three unanswered goals early in the third period, shortly after a power play had expired.

Mark Friedman was boarded by Blake Pietila near the Phantoms' team bench, and left the game. He later returned to game action.

What was expected to be a five-minute power play turned out to only be a two-minute minor, but the Phantoms took the lead anyway - getting a goal from the center point from Mikhail Vorobyev to give Lehigh Valley their first lead of the contest with 12:31 left in regulation.

Phil Myers was sent off for hooking with 5:31 left and although the Phantoms were able to kill off the ensuing minor, Binghamton raced down shortly after the penalty expired and tied things up at 3-3. Nathan Bastian centered one for Michael McLeod atop Hart's crease and the Devils forward tapped one in past the Phantoms goalie with 3:18 left in regulation to tie things back up.

OVERTIME

The two teams exchanged chances, but it was the Devils coming away with the win in the 3-on-3 extra session after a nice spin move from Colton White opened things up for him down low and he beat Hart short side for the game-winning goal.
