GAME STORY
FIRST PERIOD
After the Phantoms were seemingly outplayed the opening half of the period - registering their first shot on net with 8:10 left before the first intermission - the flood gates opened offensively for both teams to the tune of five goals in the final 6:50 of the first frame.
GOAL 1
Alex Lyon faced the first eight shots of the hockey game and started a sequence with just under seven minutes left with another stop on Spencer Smallman, but the rebound was lost in traffic atop the crease before the puck darted out to Patrick Brown - stationed alone in the slot. Brown's put-back past Lyon was good for his fourth tally on the season. 1-0 Charlotte.
GOAL 2
On the next shift, Cole Bardreau's pressure forechecking along the right wing forced a Checkers forward to backpedal behind his own net before turning a puck over in front to Greg Carey, who finished off an unassisted goal for his eighth of the season to tie the game up at 1-1.
GOAL 3
Charlotte responded themselves a few minutes later, with Julien Gauthier leaving one for Aleksi Saarela atop the right wing circle. Saarela's quick shot beat Lyon under his glove-side armpit.
GOAL 4
Zach Palmquist welcomed himself to the home fans with his first goal of the season to tie the game back up at 2-2 with 2:26 left before the first intermission, gathering a puck atop the left-wing circle and sniping one top shelf on Alex Nedeljkovic.
GOAL 5
With the Phantoms on a power play, a quick face-off win and good puck movement saw David Kase get a pass back to T.J. Brennan for a shot that was tipped past Nedeljkovic by Chris Conner to give the Phantoms their first lead of the night at 3-2 with 1:50 left before the first intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
The seesaw battle continued in the middle frame, as the Checkers got back to their strong play to open the first period and tallied back-to-back goals to regain their lead at 4-3 on goals from Trevor Carrick and Nick Schilkey in the opening half of the period.
