GAME STORY

FIRST PERIOD

An early power play for Providence - drawn by Jordan Szwarz being slashed on a mini-breakaway from the blue line - gave the PBruins some early scoring chances, but Alex Lyon was equal to the task on some dangerous shots against to get Phil Myers' minor killed off.

Myers exited the box and almost instantly made up for the stick infraction, breaking up a play at the Phantoms' defensive zone blue line and springing Connor Bunnaman and Mark Friedman on a 2-on-1 chance up ice.

Friedman and Bunnaman worked the give-and-go to perfection, with Friedman moving it across to Bunnaman and one-touching the return feed into an empty net past out-stretched Bruins goaltender Dan Vladar. Friedman's 2nd goal of the season gave the Phantoms the early 1-0 lead 6:30 into the contest.

Still, Providence had some extended offensive zone pressure following the Phantoms' goal. Lyon stood in and kept his team in the lead heading to the middle frame, stopping all 13 PBruins' shots he faced in the opening 20 minutes.

SECOND PERIOD

Outside of drawing a power play in the opening 71 seconds, the Phantoms played long portions of the middle frame in the defensive zone. Through the first 13 minutes of the period, the home team managed just three shots on goal to the PBruins' eight pucks on net.

Still, the goaltenders stole the show much as they did in the opening 20 minutes. Alex Lyon faced the better quality of shots, but some timely saves from Dan Vladar kept the game at a 1-0 score.

A late penalty kill by Lehigh Valley, coupled with some four-on-four hockey to finish the middle frame, brought the two teams to the third period in a one-goal game.

THIRD PERIOD

The Phantoms didn't sit back and play not to lose to begin the third, and as such were able to extend their lead to 2-0 just 3:16 into the final frame on a goal from Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

After Friedman led a rush up ice for a chance that just missed, Greg Carey got a loose puck to the center point for T.J. Brennan. The Phantoms' defenseman quickly spotted Aube-Kubel at the left-wing circle, firing a pass for a quick shot that eluded PBruins' goalie Dan Vladar and extended the Phantoms' lead to two.

A bad bounce, literally, off of Zach Palmquist's face at the defensive zone blue line gave Providence the break they needed to get back into the game. Karson Kuhlman tried to fire a pass for Joona Koppanen, but after the errant pass hit Palmquist up high - the puck lay flat for Koppanen to come in on a mini-breakaway and shoot one past Lyon to make it a 2-1 game with 7:21 left in regulation.

A trio of penalties in a scrum with 2:26 left put the Phantoms on a 4-on-3 shorthanded PK, which turned into a 5-on-3 when Providence pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but the Phantoms' PK stood tall - getting a big gutsy shot block from Tyrell Goulbourne before Phil Myers won a race to the loose puck in the defensive zone and chopped one the length of the ice into the empty net to complete the 3-1 final score.
