GAME STORY

FIRST PERIOD

The Phantoms got the game's first six shots on net in the opening half of the first frame, and drew themselves a power play. They had gotten to their game from the opening few shifts.

An early chance for Chris Conner on the right-wing as Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Mike Vecchione converged in the neutral zone and forced a turnover. Later, the fourth line had a strong shift in the offensive zone after Alex Krushelnyski beat out an icing call. Krushelnyski found Steven Swavely in the slot, but the Reading, Pa native couldn't get all of his shot on Devils goalie Evan Cormier.

Credit to Cormier for keeping the game scoreless through the opening 12 minutes - the time it took for the team in front of him to generate their first shot on goal.

As the period wore on - and it did so without many whistles - the Phantoms continued to spend most of their time in the offensive zone, though without anything to show for it on the scoresheet heading into the first intermission.

SECOND PERIOD

Things started to open a little bit in the opening minutes of the middle frame, but it didn't produce any goals right off the bat.

Alex Lyon came up big on a left pad save on Nick Saracino from atop the crease to keep the game scoreless, but Devils goalie Evan Cormier -- making his 5th career AHL start -- stopped a pair of mini-breakaways from Nic Aube-Kubel and Colin McDonald to prevent the Phantoms from opening the scoring.

It wasn't until near the midway of regulation that the game produced its first goal.

Devils forward Nick Lappin entered the offensive zone and fired a shot on Lyon, who made the initial stop, but the rebound kicked in the middle right to Ryan Schmelzer for the put back over Lyon's left pad to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead with 10:44 left in the 2nd.

As a penalty to Zach Palmquist was expiring, the Devils extended their lead to 2-0 with 3:55 left before the second intermission. Brandon Gignac fired a bad-angle shot from down low below the left-wing circle, and got a re-direct in front from Lappin that beat Lyon to the short side as he was sliding across expecting the puck to get through to the far side.

Lehigh Valley got a late power play and had some chances to get on the board, but Cormier continued to make the necessary stops - extending his personal shutout streak to 101 minutes and 57 seconds heading to the third period with his team in front by two.

THIRD PERIOD

The frustration on the Phantoms' side of things was becoming more and more clear with each passing shift. They were getting chances offensively, but not a lot were of the "high-danger" variety. A lot of shots kept to the outside, and most times it was one and done. The second and third chance opportunities weren't there.

It was only fitting the way Lehigh Valley was finally able to put one in past Cormier. A fluttering, spinning give to the net from the corner from Zach Palmquist seemingly eluded the goalie and bounced in with 7:05 left to make it a one-goal game - and for the moment giving the team some life.

But that's as close as the Phantoms would get. A suspect slashing minor to Mikhail Vorobyev with exactly two minutes left negated the home team's hope of a third period comeback.
