GAME STORY
FIRST PERIOD
The Phantoms weren't able to get much to the net in the opening period. In fact, it wasn't until there was just over five and a half minutes left before the first intermission that Lehigh Valley was credited with their first shot on goal -- and that was a hit post down low by Carsen Twarynski.
By then, the Bears had already taken a 1-0 lead.
Garrett Pilon fed Connor Hobbs for a quick shot past Alex Lyon with 6:52 left in the first frame to put Hershey on the board first. It marked the first time in his last nine appearances that Lyon allowed a first period goal.
SECOND PERIOD
Lehigh Valley had a glorious opportunity to even the score in the opening minutes of the period, getting an extended five-on-three power play opportunity after a pair of Hershey penalties 35 seconds apart in the opening 1:23 of the middle frame.
Unfortunately for the Phantoms, Jayson Megna stole a puck and got a shorthanded breakaway shortly after the two-man advantage started - drawing a slashing minor that prevented the Phantoms power play from getting anything going.
As the period wore on, Lehigh Valley started generating more consistent offensive pressure - to the tune of 15 second period shots. Bears goaltender Ilya Samsonov was equal to the teak on everything thrown his way through the first two periods, but Lehigh Valley still has 20 minutes and a manageable one-goal hockey game in front of them heading to the final frame.
THIRD PERIOD
Again in the final frame, the Phantoms got a golden opportunity with another 5-on-3 power play chance. This after newcomer Justin Bailey drew a pair of penalties on the same sequence to give the home team a full two minutes of two-man advantage time.
This time, Lehigh Valley cashed in - tying up the game with 16:26 left in regulation when Phil Myers fed Greg Carey a perfect pass to the right-wing circle where Carey sent a one-timer past Samsonov for his 20th goal of the season.
From there, Hershey really dominated play. They out shot the Phantoms 20-5 in the period and had a five-on-three power play of their own but were unable to find the go-ahead goal.
Credit Lyon and the Phantoms' penalty killers for getting this one to overtime.
