GAME STORY
FIRST PERIOD
After a tough loss last night that really felt like the beginning of the end for Lehigh Valley, it begged to be answered which team would show up for the opening puck drop against Toronto Saturday night.
Through 20 minutes, a much better effort from the home.
Toronto opened the scoring near the midway mark of the period, with Jordan Subban and Michael Carcone teaming up to set up an open Tanner MacMaster in the slot. The shot from MacMaster beat Mike McKenna through some traffic in front, putting the Marlies ahead 1-0 with 11:09 left in the opening period.
From there, the Phantoms turned things up a notch - really taking it to Toronto and dominating play before being rewarded with a game-tying goal with 4:13 left before the first intermission.
Some circling and cycling in the offensive zone produced the goal, with Nicolas Aube-Kubel wheeling behind the net and setting up Mark Friedman at the point. Friedman faked a shot and sent a perfect pass to Zach Palmquist, who was cutting to the net. Palmquist's one-touch to the net hit the post but luckily for Lehigh Valley Tyrell Goulbourne was parked above the crease and was first to the loose puck - slamming it home for his seventh of the season to send the two teams to the first intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
SECOND PERIOD
As the middle frame wore on, Toronto began to flip momentum in their favor - racking up 19 shots in the period.
Strong goaltending from Mike McKenna and Kasimir Kaskisuo kept the game deadlocked at 1-1.
The Phantoms got into penalty trouble late, taking back-to-back minors, but were able to get out of the period unscathed and head to the third in a tie game.
THIRD PERIOD
The flood gates opened in the final frame - for both penalties and goals.
Six minor penalties - including five of those in the opening half of the period - opened things up to the tune of FIVE goals, which made for quite the exciting finish.
First, Toronto took the 2-1 lead on a power play re-direct in front of McKenna off the stick of Chris Mueller at 9:51.
Less than two minutes later, the Phantoms responded and tied the game back up. After a scramble at the net-front saw the Phantoms nearly score on several occasions within seconds of each other, Goulbourne was able to stuff one home for his second of the evening.
Lehigh Valley took the lead just over two minutes after Goulbourne's tying goal. Zach Palmquist got a puck ahead to Reece Willcox on the right wing, and the stay-at-home defender blazed down the wing before throwing one to the middle and getting a bounce off a defender in front with 6:14 left to play.
The lead didn't hold as Toronto tied it up on an extra attacker goal with 1:57 left in regulation.
Then, the unthinkable.
With time winding down, Mueller was whistled for interference - giving the Phantoms a power play that they could surely use to their advantage in the likely to ensue overtime period. Instead, the Phantoms worked their magic and got a buzzer beater from Chris Conner with less than a second left to lift Lehigh Valley to a huge 4-3 win in regulation.
While the realistic playoff hopes might have been put to rest after Friday night's loss, the Phantoms showed no quit Saturday and came away with two points.
