GAME STORY
FIRST PERIOD
Lehigh Valley got off to a good start Saturday night, getting a long range shot from the left wing by Byron Froese to elude Monsters' goaltender Brad Thiessen's glove to put the Phantoms ahead 1-0 just under three minutes into the contest. For Froese, it's his third straight game with a goal and he extended his points scoring streak to four games with his 19th goal of the season.
While the two teams combined for 35 shots in the first period Friday, things were much tighter defensively in the opening period of tonight's rematch. The shots were even at 3-3 halfway through the period.
Pascal Laberge's recent hot streak this week continued as he drove the middle lane, got a piece of a Chris Conner centering feed while being hauled down from behind by a Monsters' defender and beat Thiessen with a bouncing puck that went in five-hole to extend the Phantoms' lead to 2-0 with 7:43 left before the first intermission.
From there, Cleveland responded and dominated play in the final minutes of the period with several close calls. Luckily for Lehigh Valley, Alex Lyon stood tall in net - particularly impressive in the waning seconds of the period making a pair of nice saves with a pileup of bodies in his crease to keep his team ahead by two heading into the middle frame.
SECOND PERIOD
The Monsters carried the momentum from the end of the first period into the opening shift of the middle frame, capitalizing on a sloppy exchange in the neutral zone with Derek Barach and Zac Dalpe connecting on a 2-on-1 chance with Dalpe notching his 4th goal against the Phantoms this weekend and 30th of the season just 40 seconds into the period to make it a one-goal game.
After some four-on-four hockey, the Monsters twice thought they had tied the game only to have both plays waved off.
First, with 15:33 left in the period, a puck got in behind Lyon and hit the left post, dribbling onto the goal line before a heads up play from Mark Friedman saved a goal.
Later, at the midway mark of the period, Cleveland was able to get a second puck past Lyon but the goal was called back due to incidental contact with the goalie as the Monsters' forward shoved Zach Palmquist into Lyon just prior to the shot.
When it was all said and done, the Phantoms headed to the locker room still in the lead, 2-1. But you had the feeling that two goals wouldn't be enough for the Phantoms to get two points.
THIRD PERIOD
The Monsters continued to dominate play, and tied things up 2:44 into the period after Cole Bardreau had trouble in the corner on a bouncing puck. Justin Scott moved the puck to the slot for Ryan MacInnis who went bar down on Lyon for his fourth of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Cleveland seemed destined to take the lead, out-shooting Lehigh Valley by as much as 11-2 in the period with under three minutes to play. Instead, Lyon continued to shut the door on the Monsters.
In fact, Bardreau nearly gave the Phantoms a regulation win - getting robbed in the slot by Thiessen with 26.1 seconds left.
OVERTIME/SHOOTOUT
In one of the most entertaining 3-on-3's of the season, the Phantoms and Monsters combined for 12 shots but both Thiessen and Lyon were equal to the task - getting the game to the shootout.
In the shootout, Mike Huntebrinker recorded the lone goal and Lyon stopped all three Monsters' shooters to give the Phantoms a crucial two points in their pursuit of a last ditch effort to climb into playoff contention.
