Day 1: AHL level signings picking up as day progresses

NY Islanders/Bridgeport Rebuilding AHL Roster On Day 1

The New York Islanders made a plethora of moves designed to build out the NHL organization's depth while also providing their AHL roster with top of the lineup talent to aid their incoming core of prospects in development in Bridgeport.

They added high-end quality players for Bridgeport with the signings of defensemen Ethan Bear and Cole McWard and fowards Matthew Highmore and Chris Terry.

New GM Mathieu Darche also rebuilt depth in the AHL ranks with several AHL contracts for defrenseman Luke Rowe and forward Hunter Drew plus AHL deals for incoming rookie forwards from the NCAA in Cam Berg, Max Dorrington and Ross Mitton.

Combined with recent moves to re-sign Julien Gauthier and Liam Foudy and a much more talented AHL Islanders' roster is already well on its way to being built.

Top-ranked AHL level free agents coming off the board as Day 1 continues

As Day 1 continued, some of the top-ranked free agents from our 'Big Board' began getting their names called.

The defending Calder Cup Champion Abbotsford Canucks saw Sammy Blais leave the organization in Montreal, but Vancouver was able to add a potential solid replacement in veteran two-way forwards in Joseph LaBate and Mackenzie MacEachern as well as two-way defender Jimmy Schuldt.

Vancouver also re-signed Arshdeep Bains, Guillame Brisebois, Aatu Raty and Max Sasson on Monday.

The Calder Cup runner up Charlotte Checkers also received a boost from their NHL parent, Florida, on the opening day of free agency as the Panthers signed goaltender Brandon Bussi and forwards Nolan Foote and Jack Studnicka to help bolster the organization's depth.

The Vegas Golden Knights added two defensemen that Henderson fans could potentially get excited about as right-handed shooter Dylan Coghlan (our 3rd-ranked free agent defenseman) and left-handed veteran in Jaycob Megna (our 26th-ranked free agent defenseman). A move that certainly provides depth on the blue line for Vegas, and maybe even a potential top pairing in AHL-Henderson.

Vegas also added forward Cole Reinhardt to a two-year contract Monday.

The New York Rangers signed top AHL-level free agent defenseman Derrick Pouliot to a two-year deal.

The Boston Bruins might've made the biggest splash of the opening day of free agency at the AHL level, adding some serious scoring touch with the signings of Matej Blumel (39G-33A in 67GP with AHL-Texas in 2024-25) and Alex Steeves (36 goals with AHL-Toronto last season) - our #1-ranked and #3-ranked AHL level free agent forwards on Inside AHL Hockey's 'Big Board'.

The Toronto Maple Leafs also had a busy day bolstering the Toronto Marlies roster with the additions of forwards Vinni Lettieri (#4-ranked free agent forward), Travis Boyd (#16-ranked free agent forward) & Bo Groulx (#28-ranked free agent forward) as well as the return of veteran defenseman Dakota Mermis.

Montreal/Laval busy on Day 1

The Montreal Canadiens made signings early and often Tuesday, bring back some familiar faces while also bolstering the organization's depth at the AHL level for Laval.

After losing goalie Cayden Primeau in a trade to Carolina Monday, Montreal signed Calder Cup runner-up goalie Kaapo Kahkonen to a one-year, $1.15 million deal.

The Canadiens also signed Calder Cup champion forward Sammy Blais to an NHL contract after Blais put in a strong season on an AHL contract in Abbotsford in 2024-25.

Montreal also brought back former Laval forward Alex Belzile on a one-year, two way deal and added depth on defense in the form of former Penguins defenseman Nate Clurman on a similar one-year, two-way contract.

Laval made some signings of their own Tuesday, adding depth defenders Tobie Bisson (a former Rocket blue liner) and Wyatte Wylie to AHL pacts.

NHL teams re-signing their own key AHL-level UFA's in opening hour of free agency

Utah let RFA forward Kailer Yamamoto head to UFA on July 1st, but re-signed the veteran to a one-year, two way contract on Tuesday. Yamamoto was the #2-ranked free agent forward on Inside AHL Hockey's 'Big Board' after putting up 56 points (20G-36A) in 54 AHL games with Tucson in 2024-25.

Unrelated: Another potential big-get for Tucson could be Utah's signing of defenseman Scott Perunovich to a one-year, two-way contract. Perunovich bounced from St. Louis to New York Islanders last season and struggled to secure a regular role with either team - appearing in 35 NHL games (2G-7A) last season.

Tampa Bay didn't submit a qualifying offer to pending RFA forward Gage Concalves, instead re-signing him on July 1st to a two-year deal with a $1.2 million AAV - perhaps signaling Concalves will be a leading candidate for NHL depth role in 2025-26.

San Jose re-signed forward Colin White to a one-year, two-way deal for 2025-26 after turning an AHL contract into an NHL deal last year with the AHL-San Jose Barracuda.

Colorado re-signed defenseman Jack Ahcan (our #9-ranked free agent defenseman) and forward T.J. Tynan (our #11-ranked free agent forward) to one-year, two-way deals for 2025-26. Both played large roles in AHL-Colorado's first place regular season finish in the Pacific Division.

An AHL trade between Montreal and St. Louis

A 1-for-1, as they say. (Congrats to TSN's Bob McKenzie who is retiring from hockey media following the free agent frenzy. The OG GOAT.)

A hockey trade of prospects kicked off free agency as Montreal acquired forward Zack Bolduc from St. Louis in exchange for defenseman Logan Mailloux.

Bolduc scored 19 goals in the NHL last season with the Blues, while Mailloux was a top pairing right-shot blueliner with AHL-Laval and had another strong offensive year and appears to be on the cusp of becoming a more regular NHL player.

Both players are in the final year of their respective three-year entry level contracts.

What I'm hearing as we approach the start of free agency

A couple quick notes of what I'm hearing around the AHL as free agency gets underway as well as the latest news/notes as the day progresses.

Seattle/Coachella Valley

I'm hearing pending Seattle UFA defenseman Gustav Olofsson is staying in the organization, and will be signing an AHL contract with the Kraken's AHL affiliate Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Olofsson is the #27-ranked free agent defenseman on Inside AHL Hockey's 'Big Board' and qualifies as a veteran as per the AHL's development rule, recording 17 points (3G-14A) in 51 games with the Firebirds in 2024-25.
