Weekly Top Stories
The big stories over the weekend were geared towards training camp and the NHL preseason.
The Flyers (again) blew an early lead in an overtime loss to the Islanders Sunday in an NHL preseason game in Nassau Coliseum that featured a very top-heavy Islanders team against a largely youthful Flyers lineup that featured the future of the organization's defense - Shayne Gostisbehere, Robert Hagg, Sam Morin, Travis Sanheim, Phil Myers and Ivan Provorov. Myers' turnover in the 3-on-3 extra session proved costly as it resulted in the game-winning goal. Mike Vecchione and Jori Lehtera (shorthanded) tallied the Flyers goals in the 3-2 loss.
Teams are making their initial cuts, trimming their NHL training camp roster and getting one step closer to submitting their 23-man roster before the regular season begins. As the cuts file in, players will be reassigned to the AHL and we'll be able to get a better idea of the makeups of these AHL teams for purposes of preparing some preview stories before the start of the AHL season in October.
