State of the Grand Rapids Griffins 2021-22
Grand Rapids GriffinsGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - There are few words that can describe the tangible excitement throughout the leagues as hockey is set to finally return.
After a challenging 2020-21 season, the Grand Rapids Griffins are poised to start one of the most important seasons for the Detroit Red Wings organization than they've had in seasons past. Not only are they welcoming several new draftees to the roster, but these new faces represent the backend development work Steve Yzerman and Co. have been doing since his first day as General Manager.
Since Yzerman took over the leadership of the team, there has been an obvious focus on prospect development and drafting well. This season marks a pivotal change in the developmental plan as the pieces are beginning to fall into place - creating what will one day be a cup-contending team. The Van Andel is ready to host their capacity of 10,800, and the fans are ready to host their team and bring back the cup.
The Roster

Van Andel Arena Opened To Full Capacity
The Griffins announced on October 7, 2021, an updated fan experience covering COVID protocol. Being one of the only teams in the league lifting protocols for fans, Grand Rapids will be equipped to host up to 10,800 fans (full capacity).
Though measures remain in place for staff, media and players, fans will be permitted to enjoy the game without having to provide proof of vaccination and will not be required to present a negative test prior to the event. The only updates being made to overall operations is cash-free concessions (card only) and paperless tickets.
Griffins Partner With WXSP-TV To Broaden Fan Experience
The Grand Rapids Griffins have partnered with local TV station, WXSP, to help make games more readily available for those unable to join in person. On top of extensive AHL coverage on AHL TV, WXSP will help broaden the reach of the Griffins and support the local broadcast community.
After a crippling season due to worldwide changes, the focus for the team has been shifted to helping do their part to boost the local business and provide support to those who supported the team during the pandemic.
Veleno Assigned To Grand Rapids
The long-anticipated decision regarding Veleno and Lucas Raymond has finally been made known. After both Veleno and Raymond had impressive rookie camps and pre-season debuts, there were many questions as to which one earned their roster spot.
Joe Veleno, drafted in 2018, will begin his 2nd full season with the Griffins (third as pro) after spending 2020-21 in Europe with Malmo.
Raymond, on the other hand, has been awarded an opening roster spot ahead of his seasoned teammate.
